Bill McHugh saw a need and jumped at the chance to fill it.

Now, the 25-year-old Lancaster resident runs his own business, McHugh Junk Removal.

The Nashoba graduate has friends throughout the area, from playing sports and a job delivering pizza for TC Landos.

"I started McHugh Junk Removal in October 2019 as a weekend side gig to make some extra money," McHugh said. Business took off and now he works with clients to get them junk free.

McHugh Junk Removal services most of the region, including Lancaster, Clinton, Bolton, Sterling, Berlin, Boylston, West Boylston, Stow, Hudson, Maynard, Acton, Marlborough, Leominster, Fitchburg, Rutland, Shirley, Ayer, Gardner, Boxborough, Shrewsbury, Northborough, Harvard, Holden, Princeton, Worcester, Lunenburg, Townsend, Littleton, Sudbury, and many of the surrounding areas.

The company has a shop on Sterling Street, Clinton. McHugh said his two full-time employees, Tony Pender and Bruno Carvalho, are "the ones getting it done on a daily basis."

McHugh can work with clients to clean up a residence or business, getting rid of unwanted items.

"A lot of times when people are selling their home, they realize they've accumulated junk over the years and they will call us for a clean out before putting their home on the market," McHugh said. "We work with many realtors and property managers and take on eviction and foreclosure clean outs. We do single item pick ups as well, so when a customer is getting a new couch, they call us to come remove their old one."

Right now, the most sought-after service is garage, attic and basement clean outs.

"With spring time approaching, we get tons of calls for these as everyone starts their spring cleaning. The garage clean outs are very common as well after the first snowfall of the year, when people realize they need to make space to park their vehicle," he said.

Not everything is trashed.

"We donate to Caring is Sharing, located on Plain Street in Clinton. We bring them gently used furniture and other items that can be repurposed," McHugh said.. "I've met with the owner, Janice (Ryan) many times and it's so nice to know they help take care of the community with warm meals and clothing to those in need. We do our best to donate to them when we can."

That is not the only charitable work the company does. They find ways to give back to the community.

"In February we donated to the Sterling Storage Solutions Diaper Drive; we try to pick a charity each month to donate to," he said. "Recently, we gave away a pair of tickets to the Mass Pirates Arena football opening day to a father and son who won our Facebook giveaway, and we will be giving away lots of WooSox tickets on our page all year long."

McHugh likes that his company is not just about trash.

"Our philosophy is this: To help customers reclaim their space while providing them with a positive experience," he said. "We show up with a clean truck, professional and respectful staff and haul your unwanted items away quickly and efficiently. We love the fact that not everything we take in is 'junk' and that we can help give back to our community."
